Fire Keeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley

For those of you who have been following along on my reading journey, you probably know by now that my friend and I started a buddy read on Fable. To read all about it and to see what our first book was, you can check out the blog using the link below.

For the month of November 2023, we picked The Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley.

Here is what the book is all about.

"As a biracial, unenrolled tribal member and the product of a scandal, Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in—both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. When her family is struck by tragedy, Daunis puts her dreams on hold to care for her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie, the charming new recruit on her brother’s hockey team.

After Daunis witnesses a shocking murder that thrusts her into a criminal investigation, she agrees to go undercover. But the deceptions—and deaths—keep piling up and soon the threat strikes too close to home. How far will she go to protect her community if it means tearing apart the only world she’s ever known?"

Fire Keeper's Daughter Book Review

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. This is the review I left on Goodreads, Instagram, and Amazon. (To see how I gage my star rating, you can check out my past blog) https://alisonshanereads.wixsite.com/alisonshanereads/post/how-i-rate-review

Overall, I liked it. I don’t think there is many books written of the American Indian culture in today’s day and age, if there is, I haven’t read them yet. I loved the representation. At first I thought it was kind of boring and a slow start, then it picked up with the twist and I had no idea it was more about drugs. I got extremely emotional and almost cried when the elders gave their paperwork for the main character. That is what I cared more about than the drug story line. As someone who loves their heritage, I love reading about others being proud of theirs.

Please remember that these reviews are based off of my own opinions and my preferences. I always encourage you to read a book for yourself to make your own review. What I might not like, you might love and vis versa.

If you would like to join our buddy at any point this year, here are the books we picked for 2024!

War by Laura Thalassa

The book we are reading for the month of March will be War by Laura Thalassa and we would love for you to join us! We have a group on Fable where we can talk and discuss as we read. I also create a reading schedule spread throughout the whole month to make it easier for everyone to follow along, even if you don't have a lot of time to dedicate to reading.

Maggie and I actually have never met in person, but through an app called whatnot, we've been able to become friends. Whatnot is an app where you can buy and sell in a live auction platform. Maggie and I both started on the app as buyers and are also now sellers. You can check out our accounts here!

Thanks for Reading!
